1. How is this semester different from last semester for you?
Well for one, I have even less time than I used to, so I'm getting more stressed out about deadlines, but I'm also getting better at working under pressure because otherwise I wouldn't finish anything. I also am trying to push myself more than last semester, because I want to be ahead of the game next year when I go to college. Because of this, I keep trying to find inspiration in new places so that I don't fall into a rut (which I still feel like I am in certain situations). Basically, I just want to go to college making designs that don't look like something you'd make in high school. Which is a tall order I guess, but it's something to actually strive for.
2. What has influenced you or your work this quarter (either positively or negatively or both)?
My biggest influence on my work this quarter is probably various designers on Behance whose names I cannot, for the life of me, pronounce. I'm starting to like things that are more minimal in style like Conrad, but there's still something about slightly more textures and colors and intricacy that I kind of love. What's influenced myself personally is basically just the knowledge that, as of this writing (3/13/14), I have 79 calendar days until graduation. So I'm being more of a perfectionist than usual, and I want my work to be unique, but I'm starting to just get run down. It's weird. I think graduation coming up fast is probably not the best thing for me, but what can ya do. I just want some sleep. Maybe then I'll be more motivated.
3. How do you feel about the evolution of your designer “voice”? What tends to be your design style or comfort zone?Well for one, I have even less time than I used to, so I'm getting more stressed out about deadlines, but I'm also getting better at working under pressure because otherwise I wouldn't finish anything. My work looks different from earlier in the year, and SO much different from last year. I feel like, for the most part, my "voice" is getting fairly "loud," and that my style is getting more unique to me, but there are times where I just revert back to what I used to do. My personal style tends to focus on typography rather than straight imagery, and leans towards minimalism rather than anything else, but I also enjoy using slight textures in the background to evoke some kind of something or other.
4. What goals are you setting for yourself in regards to the Odyssey Show? What are your plans?
I just want to fill up my space for Odyssey. I haven't really even thought about it that much, but now that I have to, I guess my goal would be to have personal work that wasn't for any CG job in there. Maybe some business card mockups (my dad wants me to make him some) or various typography posters. I just want to make something for me.
